Welcome, Comrades, to the People's Democratic Republic of Laos!
Actually, this is quite a relaxed wee country. The hot and dusty capital, Vientiane, which lies along the north bank of the Mekong river, is the very definition of "sleepy". Unfortunately, due to urgent business in Bangkok, I only had time to spend a couple of days here - but more than enough to check out Vientiane's tourist sites, including the National Museum, which mainly recounts the events that led to the "inevitable victory of the proletariat". An odd aspect for tourists is that most things can be paid for in either US dollars, Thai baht, Lao kip or any combination of the three you fancy. Long live the revolution!
